Protect what's wired in, not only what's plugged in.

Whole-house surge protectors installed at the panel, plus testing after lightning or a surge for homes around Houston.

Plug-in surge strips only protect what is plugged into them. The AC system, the garage door opener, the doorbell, the sprinkler controller and the appliances are hardwired or on outlets nobody thinks about. A whole-house surge protector mounts at the breaker panel and stops a surge before it reaches any of those circuits.

Houston gets a lot of lightning, and the summer storms are hard on electronics. We install surge protection on its own or while we are already working on the panel, and plenty of our customers add it alongside a panel swap or a new outlet. If lightning has already hit nearby, we can test the wiring and track down what was damaged.

What the job includes

  • Whole-house surge protector installed at the breaker panel
  • Panel check while we are there
  • Testing after a lightning strike or surge, including insulation resistance (megger) testing
  • Repair and replacement of damaged outlets, GFCIs and smoke detectors
  • Added at the same visit as a panel, outlet or charger job

Signs it's time to call

  • After a storm, low-voltage things stopped working: the doorbell, garage door opener, sprinkler system or cable box
  • Outlets that look burned or charred
  • Smoke detectors or GFCIs acting up after lightning
  • You just put in new appliances, a charger or a smart home system

What it costs

A surge protector at the panel is one of the smaller jobs we do, and it costs less when we install it during other panel work. Testing and repairs after a lightning strike are priced on what we find. We tell you before we start.

From a customer

"We had an additional dedicated outlet installed in the garage for a refrigerator after a gfci tripped while we were out of town. He also installed a whole house surge protector and replaced some parts on my main circuit."Angie A., Google review

Questions about this job.

What people ask us about whole-house surge protection.

Or call (832) 464-4258

Yes. A whole-house unit stops the surge at the panel. Plug-in strips can't protect anything that is hardwired, like your AC, garage door opener, doorbell or sprinkler controller. The two work well together.

Low-voltage devices usually fail first: the doorbell, garage door opener, sprinkler system, cable boxes and TVs. You may also see burned or charred outlets, or smoke detectors and GFCIs that stop working. If you notice any of that after a storm, call us at (832) 464-4258.

We use a megger, an insulation resistance tester that has been the standard tool for this for over a hundred years. It shows whether the insulation on your wiring was damaged, so we know which runs are safe and which need repair.
