A panel that keeps up with the house.

Breaker panel replacements, upgrades, sub panels and grounding for homes across West Houston, Cypress and Katy.

The breaker panel decides how much your house can run at once. Panels usually last 20 to 25 years, and a lot of houses around Houston are past that. Meanwhile the load keeps growing: bigger AC units, a second fridge in the garage, a car charger. When the panel can no longer keep up, breakers trip, connections run warm, and there is no room left for anything new.

We start by finding out what is actually going on. Sometimes one failing breaker or a loose connection is the whole problem. Sometimes the panel is worn out, or it is a brand that should come off the wall. Either way you get the reason and the price before any work starts. Outdoor panels go in NEMA 3R enclosures rated for wet locations, and most of the panels we set are on an outside wall or in the garage.

What the job includes

  • Troubleshooting and diagnosis on panels that trip, buzz or run warm
  • Full panel replacements, indoor and outdoor
  • Sub panels for a garage, shop, addition or outbuilding
  • Breaker replacements, including arc fault (AFCI) and GFCI breakers
  • Disconnects and grounding systems checked and corrected
  • Federal Pacific (FPE) panels assessed and replaced
  • Coordination with CenterPoint when the service has to be disconnected

Signs it's time to call

  • A breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it
  • A panel cover that is warm, buzzes, or smells like hot plastic
  • A Federal Pacific panel, common in homes built between the 1950s and 1990
  • No open slots left for a new circuit
  • Rust on the panel or the meter base
  • An inspector or insurance company flagged the panel

What it costs

A full panel replacement usually starts somewhere between $2,000 and $6,000. Where yours lands depends on the size of the service, where the panel sits, how many circuits move over, and what has to be brought up to code. A single bad breaker costs a lot less than that. The honest way to price it is to look at the panel in person, so that is what we do.

Most panels are good for 20 to 25 years. Heavy use, moisture and the extra load of modern appliances can shorten that. If yours is older than the house's last roof, it is worth having us look at it.

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels and their Stab-Lok breakers are considered a safety hazard by today's standards, because the breakers may not trip when they should. They show up in homes built from the 1950s through 1990. If you have one, we recommend replacing it.

Yes, as long as the panel is NEMA 3R rated for wet locations. On most houses around here the panel is on an outside wall or in the garage, and those are the two places we install most often.
